Taking part in traffic

Road traffic in the Netherlands is relatively safe. Together with Sweden, the country has the lowest number of traffic fatalities by kilometers traveled. That's due partly to strict police checks, a well maintained road network, 30 kilometer zones and the use of ‘woonerfs' (‘home zones') in residential areas.

Foreign driver's licenses

Holders of a foreign driver's license issued by one of the EU countries can have it registered at the City Hall or exchanged for a Dutch driver's license. You have to do this within a year of arriving in the Netherlands. Holders of driver's licenses issued by other countries may have to take their driving test (both theory and practical) again. For more information, see http://rijbewijs.cbr.nl/index.asp?pageid=32 (in Dutch).
