Road traffic in the Netherlands is relatively safe. Together with Sweden, the country has the lowest number of traffic fatalities by kilometers traveled. That's due partly to strict police checks, a well maintained road network, 30 kilometer zones and the use of ‘woonerfs' (‘home zones') in residential areas.

Dutch traffic boards and signs are laid down in the 'Regulations for traffic boards and signs'. These are very similar to those in most other countries. One exception is probably the 30 kilometer zones and the speed limit in ‘woonerven': walking speed.
