Utilities (gas, water, electricity, telephone, internet, TV)

The Netherlands has an excellent infrastructure. There are effectively no houses without mains electricity, drinking water, central heating, fixed-line phones, mobile phone coverage and high-speed internet. In developed areas like the Eindhoven region, there are also few properties which do not have a mains gas supply for cooking and heating, mains drainage and cable TV.

Getting connected to utilities suppliers is frequently time-consuming, and can sometimes be difficult for people moving to the Netherlands. The main problem is simply language: although most Dutch people speak English, you need to get through Dutch-language telephone menus before you can speak to an operator. Be patient and ask for help if you need it.

The list below gives the biggest suppliers of each service in the Eindhoven area.
If you can work things out from a Dutch website (or get someone to help you), you might want to go to www.huisaanluitingen.nl where you can get connected to gas, water, energy, cable and telecom services at the same time. This is not a complete list, and you can find more suppliers of each service in the Yellow Pages (in Dutch).
In general, it's best to call the suppliers of electricity, water, gas and cable, and you can contact internet providers through the web (at work in that case). You can also find mobile telephone providers on the web for comparisons, and you can go to a shop to get connected.
