Around Eindhoven:
The villages surrounding Eindhoven are Asten, Bergeijk, Best, Bladel, Cranendonck, Deurne, Eersel, Geldrop, Gemert-Bakel, Heeze-Leende, Helmond, Laarbeek, Mierlo, Nuenen c.a., Oirschot, Reusel-De Mierden, Someren, Son en Breugel, Valkenswaard, Veldhoven and Waalre. We'll highlight a few of these here.
Son and Breugel
Located about 11 km to the north of Eindhoven, Son has about 10,000 residents. The old village has been in existence since about 1000 AD but there was a large increase in population during the 20th century and most people live in relatively modern housing. There is a large (by Dutch standards) wooded area around Son which offers enjoyable walking and cycling. There are also a number of sports clubs including badminton, cricket, dancing, hockey, riding and soccer. Basic shopping can be done in the village, but most people go to Eindhoven for major items of clothing etc.
Nuenen
About 9 km to the north-east of the city center, Nuenen has a population of 23,000. The village has existed in some form for nearly 1500 years, and although much of the housing is modern it still prides itself on being a quiet and green place to live. Nuenen was also home to Vincent van Gogh at one time, and he painted his well known work ‘The potato eaters' there. Sports organizations include athletics, golf, gymnastics, riding, squash, tennis and swimming. Basic shopping can be done in the village, but most people go to Eindhoven for major items of clothing etc.
Geldrop
Geldrop has a population of about 28,000, is 7 km from Eindhoven center and forms part of the Geldrop-Mierlo district. It was once home to a thriving textile industry, but now has relatively few jobs, and most people work elsewhere. The village is home to a number of sports clubs including badminton, basketball, scuba diving, hockey, Taekwon-do, tennis, football and swimming. Basic shopping can be done in the village, but most people go to Eindhoven for major items of clothing etc.
Waalre
Waalre is 8 km south-west of Eindhoven and has a population of about 16,000. The village has existed since the 8th century, but as with most of this area, the real growth in population took place in the 20th century. It prides itself in having over 600 hectares of woodland open to the public for walking, cycling and riding. Other sports available in Waalre include badminton, basketball, gymnastics, rowing, fencing and volleyball. Basic shopping can be done in the village, but most people go to Eindhoven for major items.
Veldhoven
With its center about 7 km from Eindhoven, Veldhoven forms the western suburb of the city. It is a separate entity in political terms, and has its own modern center with shopping facilities, a library and cinema. There are also a museum and music school, as well as all sports facilities comparable to those of the other villages. There are nearly 47,000 people and 21,000 jobs in Veldhoven.
Best
Best, located 13 km north-west of Eindhoven, has a population of 29,000. The town claims a long history (from 1700 BC according to some sources), and has developed from an agricultural center to one with industry (there was a major clog-maker in the town in the 19th century) and residential areas. Sports such as badminton, basketball, scuba diving, hockey, martial arts, tennis, football and swimming are found in the town. There is also a high street for shopping.
